“Should I Get Life Insurance Before I Get Pregnant?”
Many people don’t think about life insurance until they think about starting a family.
In fact, according to a recent YouGov Report there is a significant proportion of the UK population who do not get life insurance at all.
Their research found that three out of five (60%) respondents were not covered by any type of life insurance. Of this number, 17% used to be covered but are not now.
Affordability is one of the main reasons why more people do not take up life protection. 34% said that they cannot afford it. 22% say they do not see the need because they have no family or dependents.
However, it is common for women to arrange life cover during pregnancy – an expectant mother naturally wants to do all she can to protect her unborn child – and that often includes taking care of its financial needs in the event of an untimely death.
If you are generally healthy, your pregnancy should not affect your premiums too much. But it could do.
The insurer will want to know your weight and your pregnancy weight could distort the figures. It’s usually a good idea to arrange the cover before you are pregnant or as early as possible in your pregnancy. Conditions such as anaemia and hypertension are relatively common as the pregnancy progresses (and are usually temporary) and some companies will account for the fact that you gained weight due to the pregnancy. However, some insurers will not provide cover until after the birth if you are experiencing certain medical problems - which can mean that you are not able to get the cover you want during your pregnancy. Plus, other factors which can arise after the birth, such as postpartum depression, can affect your ability to get the best rates.
