‘It would be a crime to ignore life insurance’
"It would be a crime to ignore life insurance" was the attention-grabbing headline, published earlier this week by The Sunday Times, accompanied with an image of Walter White from the hit TV series Breaking Bad. Suitably so, because in the series White turned to crime, after being diagnosed with terminal cancer, to provide for the future of his family. The Sunday Times also remarked, “For the security and peace of mind of your family, it (life insurance) is the most important policy you will buy”.
Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert, also appeared on This Morning on Monday and made it known to viewers that life insurance is important for anyone with a family, he said, “it’s something parents do need to think about” and remarked, “It’s an unpleasant conversation, but life insurance is a key consideration for anyone with a family – as it’s important to think are your finances protected should the worst happen?
“Sadly, around one child in 29 loses a parent before they grow up. And the grief and misery are often compounded by a loss of income, causing a financial crisis. Yet life insurance is one of the cheapest ways to protect against this.”
So why do so many of us pay more attention to choosing car insurance than life insurance?
We know parents do think about the risk of either themselves or their partner dying and the impact this would have on their family. According to a study by Aviva, 1 in 5 of us say we think about it once a week or more! However, recognising the need for life insurance is often coupled with a (sometimes lengthy) decision-making process and for some people, confusion. People think buying life insurance is complex, it involves a lengthy application process, medicals and significant cost! But the truth is, it could be far less complicated and cost a lot less than you may think.
Indeed, this is probably why Martin Lewis took to our screens again this week - to explain the different types of life insurance that are available and to offer tips and guidance on how to get the right life insurance policy, but also how to get it the cheapest way.
Guidance provided on his website is clear, “Don’t go straight to an insurer – as you’ll pay full price and it's not the cheapest on the market. Even using a comparison site – while better than going direct to an insurer – isn’t the cheapest way, as they find you the cheapest option generally at full commission and that can be huge”.
